I have given many of the AI class participants some of these wonderful mini brushes.
Some of you really like them and have asked where they could get more. I put links up for these but the links change. The easiest way is to go to Amazon.com and do a search for “dental micro brushes”
Many will pop up and here is a photo of one….
Alcohol inks are best used on most non-porous surfaces. Some of the surfaces are things like: ceramic tiles, YUPO paper, glass, tin, metals and many more. The two I have been using the most are YUPO and tiles.
Here is a video from Tim Holtz of Ranger Inks demonstrating some of the surfaces possible.
I use 3 drops of glycerin to 1.5 oz. of 91% alcohol
Other recommend different percentages. You can play it to see what you like IE
2 drops of glycerin to 1.5 oz of alcohol
3 drops of glycerin to 2 oz of alcohol
4 drops of glycerin to 1.5 oz of alcohol
The glycerin is vegetable glycerin. I got my first one at a health food store. Then I bought some on Amazon.
Note: I have found sometimes on the tile the inks rub off really easily when dried. Perhaps if they are sealed this would not happen.
Watch the video below on supplies.
Note: I changed my primary colors in Pinata to: Baja Blue, Senorita Magenta, and Sunbright Yellow. You get pure colors with these primary colors. (not Sapphire and Chili Pepper)
The print version of supply list: click here
Alcohol inks 3 minimum
3 primary colors (red, yellow, blue)
Ideal colors would be:
They have an Exciter Kit which is great with a lot more colors
If using Adirondack Ink by Ranger Inks
Again a minimum of 3 primary colors
Tiles 4.25 x 4.25 (I like to do tiles so I buy a box of them at the hardware store.) White tiles and glazed.
Yupo paper (this is a link to 3 pads of 5×7 Yupo Paper.) We paint small as the ink dries for fast.
Plastic, latex, or latex free, gloves
Cotton balls or makeup remover pads.
91% rubbing alcohol
alcohol applicator I like small bottles with nibs to squeeze alcohol out
small dish or cup to put alcohol ink
“drip pan” I use an old plastic top to spinach (I have some to share if you do not eat vegetables
small round plastic palette
I like to use freezer paper turn waxy side down for covering the table surface. You also buy a roll of it at Costco,
8×10 glass (the edge should be wrapped with tape for safety) or stiff surface to paint with Yupo . This is optional you will see it in the videos.
Canned Air I get a six pack at Costco.

One of the most asked about and experimented with in the alcohol ink communities is all about sealing tiles and YUPO paper.
Krylon Kamar for the first coat. I like that it because it does not disturb my signature or the painting. I usually do two coats. (Even if you decide to try resin use this spray first.)
After Kamar varnish, I now use Rust-Oleum often found at a hardware or automotive store.
Alcohol inks will fade in direct sunlight. I tell customers not to have the tiles displayed in direct sunlight so I usually skip this step. However many artists do include this step to help protect against fading caused by harmful UV light rays. It is also moisture resistant and smudge-proof. link to UV Spray
To protect artwork from heat many artists are swearing by using Art Resin. This one is very popular and I just got some. It does look simple to use. They have great videos on how to use it. I just got mine and look forward to trying it out. Here are a few links to some YouTube videos on how to use Art Resin. (Even if you decide to try resin use one or two coats of Krylon Kamar spray first.)
